Requirements To Apply As A Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW)

Singapore provides a variety of work passes and permits to foreign nationals, including domestic workers. Migrant domestic workers are expected to help their Singapore employers with household and domestic tasks. Every migrant domestic worker (MDW) in Singapore must obtain a work permit.

In order to receive a work permit, an applicant must meet the age, nationality, and education requirements. However, not everyone is qualified to work as an MDW. Only a few countries' citizens are eligible.

Eligible Age:

A helper must be between the ages of 23 and 50 when applying for a Work Permit. Over-50s can only renew their work permits until they reach the age of 60.

Eligible Source country or region

A migrant domestic worker must be from an approved source country or region, which includes:

  • India,

  • Indonesia,

  • Myanmar and

  • Philippines.

Eligible Education A helper must have completed at least 8 years of formal education and hold a recognized certificate. The other requirements: In addition, helpers must also work at employers' NRIC-registered addresses. They must not be related to their employers. They must not be in Singapore during the Work Permit application process. If they are first-time helpers, they should attend the Settling-In Program (SIP).The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will notify employers if their assistance is required to attend the SIP in the Work Permit in-principle approval (IPA) letter. Employers can only bring in helpers into Singapore after receiving an IPA letter and paying a $5,000 security bond. (This is not applicable to Malaysian employees.)
