The First Week: A Success Checklist for New Employers

Welcoming a new domestic helper into your home is a major milestone. Whether you are a first-time employer or an experienced household, the first seven days are the most critical for setting the tone of your working relationship.

As a leading maid agency in Singapore, we have seen that a structured onboarding process significantly improves retention and household harmony. Use this checklist to ensure a seamless transition for your family and your new helper.

1. Preparation: Before Your Helper Arrives

Setting the stage for success starts before she even steps through your front door.

  • Privacy and Comfort: Ensure her dedicated sleeping area is clean and private. Providing basic necessities like a pillow, blanket, and storage space shows respect for her well-being.

  • The Welcome Kit: A small gesture goes a long way. Provide a "Welcome Pack" with essential toiletries (soap, toothbrush, shampoo) so she doesn't have to worry about personal items on her first night.

  • Administrative Readiness: Have a copy of her contract, the Maid Insurance policy, and your contact details ready in a folder.

2. The First 48 Hours: Safety and Orientation

The first two days should focus on safety and "the basics" of your specific home.

  • The Safety Walkthrough: Show her the location of the first-aid kit and fire extinguisher. Explain how to securely lock windows and doors.

  • Appliance 101: Don't assume experience with your specific technology. Walk her through the washing machine, vacuum, and kitchen appliances.

  • Neighborhood Introduction: Take a walk to the nearest grocery store, bus stop, and the clinic where she will attend her 6-monthly medical examination (6ME).

3. Days 3–5: Skill Integration and Caregiving

Now is the time to transition into the specialized routines of your household.

  • Caregiving Handover: If you have hired an infant care maid or elder care maid, spend these days supervising tasks. Observe her technique with feeding or mobility assistance and provide gentle, real-time guidance.

  • Meal and Dietary Preferences: Discuss your family’s food allergies, spice tolerances, and preferred cooking styles.

  • Establishing a Schedule: Provide a clear, written daily schedule. Ensure it includes designated rest periods and meal times to prevent burnout.

4. Day 7: The First Review

Before the first week concludes, sit down for a "temperature check" conversation.

  • Open Dialogue: Ask her if she has any questions about her duties or if she needs any specific tools to do her job better.

  • Constructive Feedback: Praise her for what she did well and clarify any areas where the "house rules" might have been misunderstood.

  • Communication Review: If you are using a translation app or a specific communication style, ensure she feels comfortable using it.

Hiring through a reliable maid agency is only the first half of the journey; the second half is the care you put into the onboarding process.  By following this checklist, you transform a daunting transition into a structured, professional, and welcoming start.
